FAA changes have applied to Non Commercial/Recreational pilots wishing to fly light aircraft since May 2017.
BasicMed is a new type of certificate that requires a pilot to have held a valid 3rd class medical in the last 10 years, issued anytime since July 15, 2006. This applies to Special Issuance medicals as well. THIS IS DONE WITH YOUR PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR, WHO DOES NOT NEED TO BE AN AME.
Sport Pilot Certificate does not require a medical exam.
Option 1 - Continue to obtain a 3rd Class medical certificate. The new rules about BasicMed do not apply if you choose this option.
Please call the office to schedule an appointment. You will have a better choice of times if you can wait till the end of the month for your visit.
Option 2 - If you wish to fly without a 3rd Class medical certificate after May 1st, 2017, you will need to see a licensed physician for a physical exam, complete the associated checklists (and keep the paperwork in a logbook or a digital reproduction that can be shown upon request), and take an approved online aeromedical education course.
A number of medical conditions will require a one time special issuance medical.
Option 3 - Sport Pilot flying requires no medical exam to fly small 2 seat aircraft. Glider flying also requires no medical exam.
